After completing my mentorship program with Lena, 25 years of “counseling” finally made sense. For me, the difference was being able to talk with someone on the same level, instead of to someone.

“Modern Recovery paired me up with a recovery coach that understood my background and interests, and I developed a great relationship with them while moving forward in early recovery. Modern was very helpful and supplied all the tools I needed to transition back into day-to-day life.”

How Online IOP for BPD Works

Borderline personality disorder can affect several parts of daily life at once, from emotional regulation and relationships to impulsive urges and difficulty maintaining stability. Our virtual IOP brings these concerns into one coordinated treatment plan, with clinical therapy and recovery coaching working together throughout the week.

  • Trauma-informed clinical care: Work with master’s-level therapists who can address BPD symptoms, emotional dysregulation, and related concerns within a structured treatment setting.
  • Individual and group therapy: Get both one-on-one support for personal treatment goals and structured group work focused on skills, patterns, and interpersonal challenges.
  • Recovery coaching between clinical sessions: Work with a recovery coach on practical challenges that arise outside therapy, including routines, relationships, triggers, and coping strategies.
  • Flexible session options: Morning, midday, and evening scheduling options can make it easier to participate in treatment while maintaining work, family, and other responsibilities.

What we treat alongside BPD

  • BPD and substance use: We support for people who use substances to cope with overwhelming emotions, relationship distress, or other BPD symptoms.
  • BPD with depression or anxiety: We address emotional dysregulation alongside persistent low mood, anxiety, or other co-occurring symptoms.
  • Self-harm and suicidal thoughts: Clinical support for appropriate presentations, with safety assessment and a clear plan for determining when a higher level of care is needed.
  • Relationship difficulties: You’ll work on patterns involving abandonment fears, intense conflict, unstable relationships, or rapidly changing perceptions of others.
  • Identity and emotional instability: We address difficulties with self-image, emotional regulation, impulsivity, and maintaining a consistent sense of self.

Is Online IOP for BPD right for you?

Online IOP may be worth considering if BPD symptoms are affecting your relationships, emotional regulation, work, or daily functioning and weekly therapy isn’t providing enough structure or support. It can offer a more intensive level of outpatient care while allowing you to remain at home and continue managing your everyday responsibilities.

  • You need more structure than weekly therapy provides: Symptoms or recurring challenges may be difficult to manage with a single appointment each week.
  • BPD symptoms are affecting daily functioning: Emotional intensity, relationship difficulties, impulsive behaviors, or an unstable sense of self may be interfering with work, family life, or other responsibilities.
  • You want structured support without residential treatment: Online IOP allows you to participate in a more intensive treatment program while continuing to live at home.
  • You can participate safely from home: Virtual treatment requires a private setting where you can attend sessions and engage meaningfully in care.
  • You are willing to participate consistently: IOP works best when you can attend scheduled clinical sessions, engage with your treatment team, and practice the skills discussed between sessions.

How long does BPD IOP last?

The length of an intensive outpatient program for BPD varies from person to person. There isn’t one fixed treatment timeline that works for everyone. We consider your symptoms, treatment goals, response to care, and ability to function between sessions when determining how long IOP remains appropriate.

  • Treatment length depends on your needs: Some people may need a shorter period of intensive support, while others benefit from continued structure as they work toward their treatment goals.
  • Your progress is reviewed over time: The treatment team will evaluate how you’re responding to therapy, applying skills, managing symptoms, and functioning in daily life.
  • The goal isn’t to stay in IOP indefinitely: As your needs change, your care team can determine whether you would benefit from continuing IOP, stepping down to a less intensive level of care, or transitioning to another appropriate service.
  • Your next level of care is part of the plan: Transitioning out of IOP may involve ongoing outpatient therapy, medication management when appropriate, recovery support, or other services based on your individual needs.
