Types of Therapy Programs

Inpatient Mental Health Treatment

Inpatient mental health treatment and therapy involves staying at a facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the duration of the person’s treatment.

This level of care is for those who need more intensive treatment in order to reach their goals.

During their inpatient stay, teens will work with a psychiatrist to get on the right medication, if medication is needed. This can be a process because not all medications work the same way for everyone.

Adolescents will also participate in various forms of therapy. They may have group sessions and individual sessions with their own therapist during the course of their stay.

Intensive Outpatient Therapy

For some teens, continuing to live at home while they receive therapy is a lot more therapeutic. In cases like these, intensive outpatient therapy can be the best solution.

During intensive outpatient therapy, adolescents participate in a program that offers longer sessions, typically during the evening hours. This allows them to go to school during the day and it does not disrupt their lives as much as inpatient programs would.

During their appointments, teens would work with a psychiatrist for medication management as well as have their individual and group therapy sessions.

Outpatient Therapy

Outpatient mental health therapy for teens can be helpful for young people who need a lower level of support.

This option might be utilized as a form of follow-up treatment after a teen has participated in an inpatient program or in an intensive outpatient program.

Outpatient therapy is typically tailored to the needs of the client. At first, clients may have appointments as often as three times per week, but that may be scaled down as they continue in therapy and progress.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a form of therapy that can help with many different mental health issues, including depression, substance abuse, anxiety disorders and eating disorders.

CBT is short-term therapy, and it is useful for teens because it can help them change the way they think. This, in turn, can help them change unwanted behaviors.

CBT is based on several beliefs and they include:

Cognitive behavioral therapy requires active participation from the client; it is not passive, and there is often homework that needs to be completed in between sessions.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is similar to CBT, but with a few modifications.

The goal of DBT is to help people learn how to live in the moment, cope with stress in healthy ways, improve their relationships with other people and regulate their emotions.

DBT can help people in many ways by teaching them:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, or EMDR, is a type of treatment that is used to help trauma victims heal and recover.

It is a structured therapy that encourages the client to briefly focus on their traumatic memories while experiencing typical eye movements. The eye movements are associated with a reduction in the emotions associated with the trauma and the vividness of those memories.

Trauma victims struggle because of unresolved or improperly processed memories linked to the traumatic event they experienced.

When those memories are triggered in some way, they experience symptoms of PTSD or other mental health disorders.

EMDR is a short-term treatment method that is usually completed in 6-12 sessions; although sometimes even fewer sessions are needed.

Does Health Insurance Cover Mental Health Therapy for Teens?

Many parents might be concerned about whether their health insurance will cover the cost of mental health therapy for their adolescents.

The Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010, and this law requires health insurance companies to at least help cover the cost of mental health treatment, addiction treatment and more.

Many treatment centers accept most private health insurance plans. Quite often, the cost of therapy, medication management and other forms of treatment are covered in full. Sometimes it is necessary to pay a small copay, but those costs should be minimal.

Find a Therapist for Adolescents

Finding the right therapists is important. Parents want someone their child will connect with so they can begin the healing process.

There are several ways to find a qualified mental health therapist for adolescents in Phoenix.

Child Psychologist vs. Child Psychiatrist

A lot of parents have questions about the types of mental health professionals their children should see. In fact, they will frequently use the terms psychologist and psychiatrist interchangeably, but these are two different types of doctors.

A child psychologist is a mental health professional who does not have the ability or licenses to prescribe medication. Their role is to provide talk therapy or other types of therapy as we mentioned above.

Alternatively, a child psychiatrist is much different. These mental health professionals do have the ability and licenses necessary to prescribe medications.

It is not uncommon for psychiatrists to also provide some form of therapy as well. Doing so gives them valuable insight into the issues the child is struggling with and it helps them understand what types of medication may be necessary to improve the way they feel and behave.

As far as which one is needed, quite often, children can benefit from seeing both.

Not all children will need to take medication; some will only need therapy to get at the heart of their issues. But medication is always a possibility.

The type of therapy that a child psychologist can offer is much more intensive than what a psychiatrist can offer, and therapy is a key part of mental health treatment plans for children.
