Types of Therapy Programs

Inpatient Mental Health Treatment

Inpatient mental health treatment will provide a home-like, present-day atmosphere for the teen that will provide around the clock observation.

It will include 24 hour skilled nursing observation usually overseen by a psychiatrist, 7 days a week and the duration is determined by the teen’s treatment.

When a teen stays at an inpatient mental health program, personalized treatment is given by a team of licensed clinicians, registered nurses and a psychiatrist to help teens reach their goals.

At times medications are prescribed if the health professionals see it necessary. If medication management is part of the treatment, the teen will be closely monitored because it is a process to understand if the medication is helping the teen with the mental health concerns.

Adolescents will have a full schedule during the day. The day will include structured supervised time, group and individual psychotherapy, education, and recreational therapy.

Intensive Outpatient Therapy

Intensive outpatient therapy is a type of therapy that offers teens a more intensive way to get the treatment they need without having to stay in an inpatient facility..

This type of therapy can be beneficial because it provides the structure of being in intensive therapy with the added value of being able to participate in normal life at home.

For adolescents, this type of therapy is advantageous because appointments can be scheduled after school, during the evening hours.

Teens can continue to go to school and have extracurricular activities and not feel like their world is going to be disrupted, and get the benefit of getting therapy at home.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, also known as (EDMR) is a type of therapy treatment that is a non-drug, no-hypnosis psychotherapy that guides a teen through a troubling emotion while moving the eyes back and forth rapidly.

This rapid eye movement therapy is believed to help the teen process the event from the past. Most traumatic experiences cause struggles because the memories were improperly processed in the brain.

The benefit is that this therapy allows the teen’s brain to properly process the strong emotion and the strong emotion loses its power and frees the teen to adapt back to a mental health condition.

Substance Abuse Therapy for Teens
