Why treating them separately usually doesn’t hold

Most people with a substance use disorder are also carrying depression, anxiety, trauma, or something else underneath it. Treated apart, the two feed each other: the anxiety drives the drinking, the drinking wrecks sleep and mood, and whichever provider you see that week only has half the picture.

  • One team sees both: Your therapist and psychiatric provider are working from the same chart, the same history, the same plan, nobody’s guessing what the other one already knows.
  • You’re not stuck figuring out which one to treat first: We don’t ask you to get the depression “under control” before addressing use, or get sober before anyone will talk about the anxiety. Both get worked on from week one.
  • Cravings and symptoms get mapped together: When a session digs into what triggered a slip, mood, sleep, and stress get looked at in the same breath because they’re rarely separate events.

What sets Modern’s integrated program apart

Beyond having one team, the way our team actually works is different:

  • Clinicians are trained in both, not siloed by specialty: The therapist running your program has clinical training in substance use and in the mental health conditions that tend to travel with it, not a substance use counselor with a separate mental health provider added on.
  • Progress gets tracked as one picture: Instead of separate notes and separate outcome measures for “sobriety” and “symptoms,” your team reviews both together, since a hard week in one area usually explains what happened in the other.
  • Relapse gets read as information, not failure: If a slip happens, the first question isn’t “why didn’t you stay sober”, it’s what was going on underneath it that week. That’s usually where the real work is.

What we treat

Dual diagnosis covers a wide range of pairings, and yours doesn’t need to match a textbook description for this program to fit. On the mental health side, we most often work with:

Alongside substance use involving alcohol, opioids, stimulants, or a combination of substances.

If what you’re dealing with doesn’t line up neatly with this list, that’s normal. A lot of dual diagnoses don’t fit a clean category. The first call is where we look at your specific situation and confirm this program is the right fit, not something we guess at from a page.

After completing my mentorship program with Lena, 25 years of “counseling” finally made sense. For me, the difference was being able to talk with someone on the same level, instead of to someone.

“Modern Recovery paired me up with a recovery coach that understood my background and interests, and I developed a great relationship with them while moving forward in early recovery. Modern was very helpful and supplied all the tools I needed to transition back into day-to-day life.”

The Benefits of Our Dual Diagnosis IOP Program

Our program fewer stalls, fewer surprises, and treatment that keeps moving even when one condition improves faster than the other.

Joint intake

Both conditions get assessed together from day one, instead of an assessment for one and a referral out for the other.

Flexible scheduling

Morning, midday, or evening, with the same group and clinicians each week so you’re not restarting your history with someone new.

Medication management

When it’s part of your plan, it’s coordinated with your substance use history instead of prescribed separately from it.

Individual and group therapy

Groups are built around people managing the same combination of substance use and mental health symptoms, not a general recovery group with mental health added in.

A relapse plan for both conditions

If cravings spike, your plan addresses what’s driving them — sleep, mood, stress, trauma — not just the craving itself.

Confidential sessions from home

Delivered on a secure video platform, with nothing shared outside the program unless you choose to share it.

Treatment is tailored to your needs

If cravings intensify or a mental health symptom escalates faster than a weekly group can hold, the plan adjusts. You’re not handed off to a new provider or left waiting to see what happens.

  • More frequent sessions: When either condition is escalating faster than the group format can address, individual sessions increase to match.
  • Coordinated higher levels of care: If withdrawal risk or acute symptoms make outpatient treatment unsafe, detox or a higher level of care gets arranged directly, we don’t just refer you out and lose track of your case.
  • Family sessions: Available when substance use or mental health symptoms have strained the people closest to you.
  • Case management: Helps when the disruption has spread into work, housing, or daily logistics.
  • Step-down planning: Once your program ends, you leave with a plan for both conditions, not just the one that stabilized first.

FAQs about Dual Diagnosis IOP

It’s treatment for a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time, by the same care team instead of treating one, then the other, or splitting the two across separate providers.

No, waiting for sobriety before treating the mental health side (or vice versa) is exactly the gap dual diagnosis care is built to close. We meet you at whatever stage you’re at.

That’s what the morning, midday, and evening options are for. We build the schedule around your obligations, not the other way around.

This program isn’t a crisis or detox service. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If you’re having thoughts of self-harm and aren’t in immediate danger, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time.

Many insurance providers that covers in-person mental health treatment also cover virtual programs. Our team can assess your insurance with the info you can fill out on the verify insurance page or by giving us a call.
